I made a table to visualize it more easily, but I wasn't expecting such a dramatic uptick. I mean, in 2019 it was almost double the year before, then in 2020 it was double that, and then it was almost 7 times as many the next year. It's so wild, esp for such an old band?
I kinda get 2020, but what happened in 2021? And what happened this year? I know I'm being super autistic about this but idgaf, I'm curious about these trends lol
Actually, I should correct myself. The number of posts in the Mayhem category on AO3 were in the single digits 2015-2019. In 2020, they doubled -- from 9 to 18. Then in 2021 there were inexplicably 122. It plateaued for a while, but this year we're only in September and there's already 308 posts
There are def genres I would be more surprised seeing this happen with. I was just surprised because in the olden days, you would never have seen this kind of thing. Only VK metal would've had fanfic about it. It looks like that category took off on AO3 in 2020 and it's going through another boom?
yeah, I'm honestly surprised there are as many people writing gay black metal fic as there are. Mayhem has like 700 published stories on AO3. Which isn't like A TON but it's more than I would've expected
