Even in the original Iliad/Odyssey, Ulysses didn’t want to go to war, & didn’t want to fight. He spent an entire epic trying to get home to his family. There are other versions of his story, in which he is the insatiably curious adventurer, but not in this story, where he’s the ideal husband.
b) You want Xena to have an adequate boyfriend? Of course there’s no sparks between them. Ulysses is a dad/wife guy who’s briefly tempted by Xena’s exciting life. Xena’s briefly tempted by the prospect of a conventional life. They’re both attracted to what they don’t actually want.
I’m always confused by some Xena fans’ reaction to its “Ulysses” episode because: A) He’s not the wily many-skilled hero of The Odyssey b) He’s not an adequate boyfriend for Xena As I see it: a) Xena is actually the many-skilled wily gal behind the legend; none of the guys on the show measure up …
Kris Kristofferson was perfect casting for 1970s New Hollywood counter culture-type films and also a total action movie badass in Blade. A terrific singer, actor, and a great screen presence. Oh, and one other thing, a BRILLIANT songwriter. Rest In Peace.
