8/30 a gayl jones 2-fer-1 XXIV and XXV

XXIV I braid my hair. I sit under a wild fig tree. A yellow butterfly lands on my shoulder. I push a garlic pod into my mouth. Sometimes I am a Negro and a slave. Sometimes I am stray cattle lost in the catinga. Sometimes I am tanned hide. Sometimes I am hoof. Sometimes I am horn. Sometimes I am mountain slope. Sometimes I am a canoe hollowed out of tree trunks. XXV My mother tells me how to cure the cattle's botfly sores and ticks, ways to get minerals into cattle bellies, protect them from flies and mosquitoes. "You'll learn to be of use to him,' she says. "And he won't sell you to the nuns at Mocha." I want to know why when cattle go wild and stray from the herd, why they send men out to kill them? "It is to prevent other cattle from going wild too,' she says.
