2/8 Designed by Allen H. Stem and Charles A. Reed, who had just completed Grand Central Terminal in New York, the SPAC is a 13-story confection of Renaissance Revival, Beaux Arts, and Neoclassicism. It was mostly complete by 1916, the owners offering it as a hospital during WWI.
3/8 It formally opened at the end of 1918 to a 2 day city-wide celebration. The variety of windows on its façade hints at the many amenities inside, including restaurants, 2-story gymnasiums, sun deck, guest rooms, barbershop, billiard rooms, bowling alleys, and ballroom.
