The right using free speech as a shield for promotion of a specific set of bigotries is the principle driver of the damage that’s been done to the reputation of free speech as a principle. Through repetition they’ve created a strong association between bigotry and free speech as a concept.
When you look at the way elites responded to concrete authoritarian drift in the US - ie elites steeped in the tradition whose erosion silver is worried about - it’s hard to be concerned about the theoretical consequences of theoretical illiberal drift on the part of students.
