Just finished reading “On the Beach.” The nice thing about an apocalypse book from the 1950s is it’s dated enough that you don’t get SUPER immersed in it. Like they go to the hardware store and then LEAVE THE BABY IN THE CAR! More unrealistic than the nuclear holocaust part, I tells ya!
We just got a new observation of AT2018hyz (aka Jetty McJetface- arstechnica.com/science/2022...), and are doing follow-up w other radio telescopes! I'm always quietly awed by the thought of these fantastic machines, run by kind people, peering at the sky to do my science. It's beautiful. 🙂 🔭🧪
“This caught us completely by surprise—no one has ever seen anything like this before.”
The amazing thing about GWR is its outreach is HUGE- millions of copies sold (mainly to kids these days) in dozens of languages. My in-laws just picked up a copy of the Dutch one if you’re curious! So cool to reach so many diverse audiences!
The 2025 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records is out- and I’m in it, as the astronomy consultant!!! 😊🤩 🔭🧪🎢
A colleague went to do a job interview in fall 2020 in Copenhagen. She said they flew her out, she went to work w them and gave a talk, then they took her out for drinks after. It was pretty surreal to hear at the time, but yea pandemic was never taken as seriously there.
My daughter’s duck collection more than doubled in size today at University of Oregon faculty orientation 😅🦆
Thanks! It’s kind of wild to think about the journey it took to get here, but I’m excited to explore the universe with my students! :)
