The American suburbs are communities of promise and opportunity: safe, good schools, lots of jobs, more affordable housing. They're our greatest political bulwark against fascism. Also their zoning situation sucks
Once you fix zoning and land use they mostly become urban. So, yes.
How do you define suburbs? Not all suburbs have these properties. Changing their zoning character would make them more “small-urb”, which is good in my book. For inspiration, see many towns in Southern France. I’ll offer Crest as a prototype.
I think, related to the zoning, is their transit systems often are terrible. So many suburbs have this combination of exclusionary housing and transit policies at their core which is often directly connected to many of the purported benefits of suburbs.
I think the biggest challenge with suburbs is not the land use but the tax base, they benefit from the proximity to cities but don’t contribute to the revenue base to solve city problems.
