The connection of the original Watchmen to a conversation about the racist history of the United States, in general, but Policing, the "Lost Cause" myth, and mid-20th century American support for Fascism, in particular? Frankly fucking masterful. bsky.app/profile/did:...
The moment when I realized I was watching something amazing was a tiny cutaway shot during the big FBI briefing scene where we learn what happened as a result of a reactionary newspaper publishing Rorschach’s diaries: they become this timeline’s version of The Turner Diaries.
If you look at the 2019 watchmen series and somehow don't see a fullthroated and SCATHING critique of not only the culture of policing in the US, but also of US TV's very deep and persistent Copaganda problem, then you need to go back and rewatch watchmen. bsky.app/profile/wolv...
It also helps that the acting in the series is phenomenal. King, Gossett, Abdul-Mateen, Irons, Smart, and the rest of the cast absolutely hit it out of the park.
I need to rewatch HBO Watchmen. Truly one of the greatest, most sophisticated comics-related pieces of video art ever made.
I was astonished by the Watchmen TV series' willingness to roll up its sleeves and get in the ring.
