Once the path to mainstream journalism became “work for years as an unpaid intern in a major metropolitan area,” it priced out a lot of people who weren’t children of privilege, and ratcheted up the issues of access journalism and journalists being generally out of touch.

About two-thirds of Hillbilly Elegy is Vance talking about his unbelievably traumatic childhood and his estrangement from his father. He calls two things “weird”: going to therapy and not yelling and throwing things at your partner. This is not a joke, that’s 100% accurate.

Re: alleged Trump shooting #2... I'm not a Trump fan but, personally, I'd be grateful if I didn't see any of my mutuals talking about it being a "shame" that he was "missed" again. He deserves to face consequences, legal consequences. Let's help keep the violent rhetoric down.

Great opening paragraph: "In a stunning admission, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, JD Vance, said he was willing 'to create stories' on the campaign trail while defending his spreading false, racist rumors of pets being abducted and eaten in (Ohio)." www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024...

the WKRP episode "Carlson for President" has the preposterous premise that a inept businessman who benefited from inherited wealth would wear too much makeup and totally melt down during a debate and resort to vicious personal attacks wild what these writers came up with in the 70s

I don't know how to explain to you that it's weird and disturbing to want to be hurtful to people. To look for the opportunity, to savor and enjoy it. To just seek out ways to be mean. Not to defend yourself or someone else, just for its own sake. That's fucking creepy, bro.

I imagine he's thinking, "This isn't about *me* so why should I care? I totally owned that debate last night. I deserve many hamburders for doing so well...screaming and yelling nonsense are how you win debates, right? Ugh, this is so BORING..."
