interesting point, but I very much doubt anyone at the NYT editorial staff would consciously make the connection to siege warfare. I think it was unintentional, and just poor wording on their part.
Copy editors write the headlines, and I think it's very likely that a NYT copy editor would know exactly what that word meant and where it came from, because knowing those things is a core part of a copy editor's job.
