This is the most evident if you go back to night of the living dead, which is mostly about people successfully surviving a zombie outbreak until a racist cop shows up
And before that, Ben overcomes a racist misogynist who’s trying to reimpose the racist/sexist social order that the advent of zombies briefly overturned
are we doing tlou discourse right now? at any point in time i always have "tlou was better as a tv show than a game" locked in and ready to go
Especially in light of this: bsky.app/profile/prof... Apocalypse stories that are just “look the world always was truly secretly fascist” just isn’t true.
yeah and a bunch of their obstacles to survival before that come from people being too racist to listen to the one guy who is actually able to handle the situation
romero killed it (pun intended) with the original trilogy
one of my fav zombie movies, the girl with all the gifts, is about people having to betray and make hard decisions for what they believe is the greater good. it's still super bleak but everyone's motivations are at least understandable
see this is why you gotta dome the racist cop and then put zombie makeup on them after
too often zombie stories fall into this libertarian paradise trap, fantasizing about being tough enough to survive societal collapse without considering the rest of society.
NOTLD was about race, Dawn was about consumerism, Day was about the military industrial complex, and Land was about the abuses of capitalism. TLOU is just about being a cynical selfish asshole.
to beat a dead horse the narrative on the last of us is way more indebted to works about colonialism (THE SEARCHERS specifically) than other zombie fiction
