The preamble to the Yugoslavian wars had a bunch of ethnic tension amplified by the media when a Serb farmer in Kosovo went to the hospital for getting a bottle stuck in his rectum and decided to blame roving bands of Bosnian street toughs instead of just admitting he did it himself.

It is possible to (1) deplore how Columbia University's administration is reacting to the on-campus protests and (2) also think it is very bad that a bunch of ghoulish, antisemitic opportunists have taken it upon themselves to hang out just off-campus, harassing Jewish students and celebrating 10/7.

I always wondered whether the extreme right or extreme left played worse in societal progress in the long run. This time around I find them indistinguishable. Equally bad.
