i think this whole thing, even if it doesn't have widespread economic blowback, should be considered one of the most wasteful things in business history. $100bn+ invested in an industry with like $10bn of revenue and billions more in losses

My employer is all in on AI, top down with no actual problem to solve other than FOMO. I take comfort in knowing every dollar they spend on openAI is actually costing openAI money.

Not to mention the climate impact! Generative AI is having a massive, massive environmental cost at a time when we're desperately trying to limit emissions. Just wasteful all the way around.

again, this is a good reason to hate it (and retirement outlooks may be hurt), but is still different from the question: have these freaks wormed their way into our lives to the point that everything shuts down 2008 style if they aren't given everything they want?
