I like it for the same reason I like pilots, and my dad. Like, if you could trust it, imagine how soothing that would be. But then I hate it for the same reason I hate columnists, and my mum. They think they know everything, and they don't! ps I don't really hate my mum

It is necessarily his! Go back to 2003, when he did his principles of cliodynamics, and you will see this as one of (iirc) _seven_ . Like, it wasn't buried anywhere. It wasn't an accident. It wasn't, "here's a pretty colour, do what you like with it"

It just annoys me because I love and hate cliodynamics, & I would love it if everyone wanted to talk about it as much as I do, but they don't, they're just breaking all the nice words

yes, I agree with both of you, I'm blaming Hadley for that but to be real there was probably someone before her

well, no, he went for the broad term "elite" because "wealth overproduction" would be describing the money not the people, and "rich person overproduction" would sound like a 10-year-old coined it

no! we can't! because then it loses its meaning and some other schmuck - probably ME - has to make up a new phrase

I think if you look at the fundamentals of cliodynamics, at the absolute core of its hypothesis is the idea that economics, society, culture and history go in waves, which are scientifically mappable, partly - indeed mostly - because inequality is driving them.

Like, any of us is "potentially powerful". He's talking about people in whom that power has been realised. By being rich! Sorry for ranting at you.

But it's not, is it: Turchin's coinage is specifically describing rich people. Inequality causes elite overproduction. "Too many people" = overproduction. Only "too many rich people" could = elite overproduction
