Two images of Mars side-by-side. The image on the left shows a small amount of ultraviolet light emission from the Martian aurora before a solar storm on September 12, 2017. The image on the right shows a much larger amount of ultraviolet light emission from the Martian aurora after a solar storm on September 13, 2017. The images are from the MAVEN spacecraft's Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph. The image on the right shows the aurora more than 25 times brighter than previously detected. This strong solar event resulted in dangerous radiation levels for Mars, doubling what was previously measured by the Curiosity rover. MAVEN is studying whether Mars lost its atmosphere due to its lack of a global magnetic field.

Sun Active Region 3664 is now called Region 3697 but is very much business as usual. x.com/TamithaSkov/...

Dr. Tamitha Skov @TamithaSkov on X:

Region 3697 (old Region 3664) is at it again! A long-duration X1.45-flare and a nearly Earth-directed solarstorm launch today. We may be grazed by the shockwave of this storm in a couple of days. Radio operators on the dayside are feeling this R3-level Radio blackout for sure!
