Climate change is a powerful multiplier of risks. It aggravates all dimensions of human security and destabilizes social cohesion, economic development, food security, and the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. The relationship between climate change and conflict is complex and context-specific, yet in many parts of the world, it is already evident as a perfect storm of hunger, forced displacement, and economic inequality which in turn fuels conditions for chronic fragility and conflict. This undermines the perspectives for human security for generations to come. Looking at the underlying drivers of conflict and climate risk, there is often an assumption that conflicts are human-made, while climate risk is ‘natural’. Drawing on the latest findings in climate science, we can say with certainty that there is nothing natural any more about climate disasters. By heating the planet with greenhouse gas emissions, we have put a human-made accelerant behind the force and frequency of floods, storms, droughts and heatwaves. Suppose we combine this with the human planning and investment decisions that leave people unprepared and under-protected.
