When people don't consider themselves religious the concept of pragmatism seems to often take the role of the deity here. It's not my opinion it's not ideology it's just Facts and Logic. I have total freedom to decide that there is no alternative to constant crushing misery and pain.

I'm not sure I agree with the WASP baseline. It is possible for a wide range of different communities/perspectives to converge around the rejection of a perceived odd/weird/abhorrent ideology. Even today, when they are out from under their rocks, the unacceptability of Nazism unites a multitude.
