GG&S was sorta nice as a refutation of the notion that Europe conquered the world because of some kind of innate superiority, but it also presented colonialism & imperialism as just this natural progression of events in a way that felt like it was trying to let them off the hook.

Gosh I can't imagine why states bordering Russia would want to join a mutual defense pact. I wonder if some events in the past would make them think it was valuable? Nah. It must be US imperialism! 🙄
