They also could have gotten out of it by just not inviting the other faeries either, I think? Like if it was a whole "just inviting the important humans" event, I doubt she would have cared. But oh, inviting the other three faeries and NOT Maleficent? Oh that's a deliberate snub right there.
I really wish there was more artwork of Maleficent conjuring storms or the forest of thorns spell with her cape / robes billowing out of control.
