In honor of Kristofferson, I'm firing up this Criterion blu of Lone Star. Never seen it. Already, immediately (in the first seconds) struck by how, between this and Matewan, no one captured the color green in nature like John Sayles.
if you want to keep your radical militant coal miner kick going, be sure to watch Matewan too!

Peaks and Valleys. #Letterboxedfriday
I interviewed Sayles for Mother Jones at a German restaurant in Hoboken where we were both living at the time. It was around the release of Brother From Another Planet, so 1984 probably. A couple of years before Matewan-which I now want to see again.
One of my favorite movies of all time is available on youtube. John Sayles’ labor masterpiece, Matewan. Absolutely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it. (Thanks to the caller on The Majority Report for pointing out it’s available!) #labor#unionsm.youtube.com/watch?v=KWTD...

Lone Star, Matewan, Eight Men Out, and The Secret of Roan Inish. Sayles visited Seattle once to speak at one of our arts festivals, and beforehand he was just walking around the grounds wearing cargo shorts and smiling pleasantly, as one would expect.
Jones even briefly plays baseball in Matewan
