A few years ago Ryzen had the best multi-core performance and Intel had the best single core but apparently this has reversed as of late. Single core is still best for gaming and multicore for productivity, but at least Ryzen CPUs aren't self-destroying www.theverge.com/2024/7/26/24...

for a long time it was 'Andy giveth and Bill taketh away' aka a variant of Wirth's Law with maybe a soupcon of Jevons paradox and multicore kept that going for a while but recent advances have relied heavily on accelerators and they need much more power and cooling than CPUs
