Needed to pick up stitches last night. Could NOT get the right numbers. Today I got them on the first try.

My gauge swatch in stockinette is 11 sts/14 rows/inch. It's looser if I'm switching between knit/purls stitches in the same row. The stockings are alternating panels of seed and horizontal rib, so will be looser, but I'm not sure if it's enough to matter with a negative ease calculation in the mix.
Historic knitting 🧶 hivemind: when working a pattern with mixed pattern stitches, such as the Eleanor of Toledo stockings, do you figure gauge based off stockinette, assuming the patterning evens out, or based off one of the patterns - and if so, which one: the stretchiest, tightest, etc?

It looks to me like you've slipped the slipped stitches with the yarn in front rather than behind (or, outside the finished sock rather than inside).
#Charlottesville locals, have you seen this dog? He belongs to Pumpkin's human and he has escaped. If you spot him please let me know! (I haven't seen Pumpkin since he returned home on Wed., after I took him to the vet for neuter surgery, stitches for a cut in his foot, flea meds, & shots.)
