Down with rhodochrosite! Calcite can be fluorescent. One of the most well known occurrences of fluorescent calcite is in Franklin, New Jersey, USA. It's the bright orange bits in this rock #minerals#MinCup24www.mineralcup.org/2024/vote/r3m3

Thank you for the fun Microscopy Monday! We looked at fluorescent minerals that we collected from the Franklin mines! Lovely calcite, franklinite and willemite deposits! We fly out for #twitchconsandiego#twitch#twitchpartner#live#twitchtv#scicomm#sciantsTwitch.tv/sciants_streams

Fluorescent willemite from Franklin, USA. You can see a vein cutting across that does not have fluorescent minerals in it. ⚒️🧪

Rock specimen with mostly composed of small bright green crystals, with minor orange crystals, with a dark vein across it from top left to middle right. It is under UV light in the dark on a glass shelf with a small 2 on it. At the Royal Ontario Museum.

Testing out UV photography (it is definitely more difficult than regular). Need to order some stuff to remove stubborn dust, because it lights up like the stars on everything. #rockcollection#mineralcollection#fluorescence#uvphotography#willemite#yooperlite#fluorite#aegirine

A rock lit up with a long wave UV light. It has what is probably green willemite and pink calcite, but is mainly green splotches.
A rock lit up with a long wave UV light. It is a round polished yooperlite with fiery orange patches, dotted with deep blue spots.
A rock lit up with a long wave UV light. It is a rough yellow fluorite that turned a deep purple under the light, with lots of small cubes.
A rock lit up with a long wave UV light. It has black aegirine crystals that don't glow themselves. But the matrix - likely microcline, a white rock - lights up softly with a reddish pink.

Ooh, so that looks not unlike the stuff from Franklin and Sterling Hill, NJ, "the fluorescent mineral capital of the world" -- which has red-fluorescing calcite, bright green fluorescing willemite, and black metallic-ish franklinite www.naturesrainbows.com/post/2018/01...

For no reason, let’s take a moment to appreciate the glowing minerals found in my favorite mine, Sterling Hill Mine, in north New Jersey. North Jersey is known for a lot but oddly not for fluorescent minerals like calcite & willemite, or minerals like Franklinite, that aren’t found elsewhere.
