Not looking to stan for sports betting--I'm sure it's going to be a big net social harm, like pretty much all gambling is. But I can't not point out baserate issues whenever I see them in the wild. Baserates and survivorship-biased claims. Almost reflexive responses.

As @johnkroman.bsky.social has convincingly argued, a leading contributor to the spike in gun violence was likely the collapse in NON-POLICE public sector employees: the social workers, doctors, counselors who are as much on bribe front line of crime reduction as cops.
