Attention nerds! If you’re planning on attending the AHA and want to talk to an editor about your awesome book project, it is absolutely NOT too early to start sending those emails. (Many of us will be going straight from break to AHA setup on Jan 2.)

Yes it was probably the publisher’s choice but not “a money thing” in the sense that notes are too expensive. There are way more people who won’t buy a longer book with footnotes than people who won’t buy a book without footnotes, so it’s a choice about maximizing the audience.

writing is so funny it’s like “this is my favorite thing to do in the world and my dream” “okay then do it right now” “no thanks I would rather do literally anything else”

Wow. My childhood was very different than this.

An Instagram story from the New York Times, the photo features a small child peaking into a large well-stocked pantry through a door that says “cuisine.” The caption reads: Our reporter’s 6-year-old son hates eggs. They traveled to Paris to see if a dozen French chefs could change that.

I keep coming back to Paxton’s definition of fascism.

What Is Fascism?
The moment has come to give fascism a usable short handle, even though we know that it encompasses its subject no better than a snapshot encompasses a person.
Fascism may be defined as a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victim-hood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion.

Do they "accidentally" transfer $500,000 to your bank account and then ask for 2/3 of it back because they paid too much?
