Another reason Spain will hit those problems is that they currently lack the heat pumps/district heating that can soak up a lot of renewables. Chart from @duncangibb.net showing Spain's heat mix (Spain is the furthest to the right). The flip side is there is a lot of potential for rapid improvement.

I would assume that a lot of Spanish houses have ACs? And that this will be the most cost effective way to produce the limited amount of heating that you need in Spain Spain needs more EVs to soak up peak PV power

While that is true, what is actually also key to show, and I forgot to mention, is cooling demand. Soaks up masses of the peak PV especially.

Spain also has the very important benefit of sensible economically literate political leaders in power, similar to China. Unlike nations like Germany, the U.K., Australia, India or the USA where economically illiterate politicians continue investing in expensive fossil fuels.
