Sometimes I think about how romances written during the Regency era don't have any queer or trans people in them, but we know they existed, and we know they loved. We know, because we have the arrest records. Countless romances, told between the lines of police reports.
Because the US really prefers to bury the truth. Like the average American doesn't know we had schools, or what they were, or that our languages and religions were illegal for us into my lifetime, or that forced sterilization was active into 2018. Or that our children were purchasable until ICWA.
it's a very quick way to ensure cultural erasure. also brings to mind residential schools for indigenous children in canada.
