The people I know panicking most about Trump possibly winning in 2024? Not white liberals. Immigrants. Iranian. Chilean. Argentinian. People who know that governments can turn on a dime, go from a democracy to a dictatorship in a day. They’ve seen this happen before, and they know the signs.
My friend from Guatemala concurs.
I’m as white as they come, and I’m terrified. Like literally to the point that I’m positioning to sell everything i own in the is and go somewhere less fascist. If a Greedy Old Pedophile wins the presidency in 2024 the USA is done for as a democracy.
I’m fucking panicking, let me tell you.
Trust me, I'm aging 20 years
The inclusions of Iranians here confuse me. Many Iranian ex-pats were ambivalent to pro-Trump, mostly due to the relative wealth of the pre-Revolutionary ex-pats and their appreciation of the tax cuts. Additionally, hardline anti-regime views have been growing in recent years.
1/ I totally agree with this. I am Turkish, and I was 17 when Erdogan came to power. My family has always been part of the left wing politics, and I told everyone that if we don’t do something drastic in the country Erdogan will never leave the power and consolidate his power over time.
Do I also know Mexicans, Salvadorans, Guatemalans, and DACAs who are terrified of getting deported if Trump wins? Yes, absolutely. But they are having a different experience from my friends from these nations, who are naturalized, who feel like Cassandras and are afraid of seeing history repeat.
Personally, I’ve been wondering what my cell will look like in the Trump re-education camps when I’m sent away for being a liberal.
I am also afraid. I don't know what to do about it. I'm afraid Biden is a dead end.
And the Cubans? The ones who hate Castro? Mostly support Trump.
