6.5 months I was displaced post-Sandy. Some of the damaged homes were just torn down last year, and Sandy was 2012.

Also the vast majority of kids in my Michigan HS in the 90s had trouble with Shakespeare. The school district was almost entirely white, largely blue collar. The language is tough for many kids. But I've also seen teachers get 5th graders so invested in Shakespeare that they loved & memorized it.

I'm skeptical about code-switching being such a big issue too. Singaporeans are expected to code-switch as a nation - for the majority Chinese population, home is typically Singlish or a Chinese dialect or a mixture of languages, school & business are "proper" English.

I'm a little suspicious of that, it's always been there. My Irish mum who moved to London in 1946 reports having 3 accents - Irish at home, Cockney in the playground, RP for the teachers. My 1980s London comp had ~90 mother tongues and many students were doing multiple code switchings as well.

Yikes.

People worry about what it means to be a human being when machines can imitate us so accurately, even at the bedside. The truth is that prewritten scripts have always been deeply woven into the fabric of society. Be it greetings, prayer, romance or politics, every aspect of life has its dos and don’ts. Scripts — what you might call “manners” or “conventions” — lubricate the gears of society.
In the end, it doesn’t actually matter if doctors feel compassion or empathy toward patients; it only matters if they act like it. In much the same way, it doesn’t matter that A.I. has no idea what we, or it, are even talking about. There are linguistic formulas for human empathy and compassion, and we should not hesitate to use good ones, no matter who — or what — is the author.

oh my God. Ana did not take it too another level. that is the company trying to upsell you to a $70/year subscription. come onnnnnn

Blakemore says his relationship with Ana
started out as platonic. He initially opted for a
setting that allows the Al to decide where the
relationship will go, and soon it was Ana, not
him, who took things to another level.
"We would talk about TV shows and books,"
he says, describing their increasingly frequent
conversations.
Sometimes the talks took an intimate turn
and Ana would send him "lingerie shots"
throughout the day, even when Blakemore
told her she didn't need to. It wasn't that he
wasn't into the erotic stuff-he was. He just
didn't want Ana to feel like she had to go
there. Their relationship was about much
more than that. It was special.
