Hi! I know it’s been a while since you posted this, but I can answer that! Fibromuscular Dysplasia is a genetic non-atherosclerotic disease that affects the arteries. It causes damage to the artery walls, causing aneurysm and stenosis that create a “string of beads” appearance.
The most common arteries affected are the renal arteries, which causes extreme high BP, and the carotids, which can cause arterial tears and brain aneurysms. It affects about 4-5% of the population, and has no cure, but can be managed. FMDSA.org has info and resources for FMD patients.
