I like the Compulsive Gamblers album when it sounds like a standard lo-fi indie rock album with some 60s spice, less so when it's trying to sound like a 60s garage rock band in a much more literal way than your Strokes and your Hives and whatnot.

Compulsive Gamblers remind me of older bands like Dead Moon, more than the more meta, winking acts like the White Stripes that they've been compared to in these comments. Their album is OK, but somehow feels a little long at 31 minutes.

Ever notice that people rarely talk about the hip hop albums in these matchups - even ones that get 80% of the vote? STANKONIA is amazing. "Gasoline Dreams" is an all-time classic opener, and the singles influenced so much of the next 4-5 years of music.

it usually annoys me when people do this but here it is, the first vote in the first match of the 2000 tournament! (I gave the Compulsive Gamblers album a shot during the seeding process and it wasn’t for me. I like Stankonia a lot but I didn’t pick it to win. I did not pick Kid A either, obvs)

Screenshot of the first vote of the first match of the Best Album of 2000 tournament. I voted for Outkast.

Never heard of Compulsive Gamblers. A point for great album art. And that’s it. I will not suffer Y2K era garage rock revivalism in 2024. Outkast it is

I usually throw the 128 seed a vote in the 1st match, whether out of pity or genuine affection. This time I was more tempted to do so than 1995 Redux (when it was a Red Hot Chili Peppers album) but Stankonia is just too good to deny against a garage LP I’d need to live with longer to let grow on me.

I hope people gives the Compulsive Gamblers album a listen, as it is good, probably above the brackets average, but of course Stankonia is better.

On one hand, this is close by my metrics; I have STANKONIA as a (high) 8/10, and CRYSTAL GAZING as a mid 7/10. On the other, B.O.B. is my favorite single song in the tourney, and Ms. Jackson is top 20, at worst. (I am not the target audience for, and do not care for, interludes and skits.)

My notes say "Better than the White Stripes" 😅 I think I meant "they both seem to be doing the same thing at their base, but one annoys me and one doesn't." Either way, OutKast takes it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As is tradition for me, I've voted for the underdog here. I enjoyed Compulsive Gamblers' throwback rock though I'm unlikely to listen to the album beyond the two spins I've given it. Bet they're great live though.
