And the skills theyā€™re automating just happen to be the key skills you need to succeed at university. To say nothing of everyday life. Itā€™s a masterclass in sabotaging studentsā€™ university and life prospects. If my kids were in the Ottawa Catholic School Board, Iā€™d transfer them out in an instant.

The absolute worst place to allow generative AI is in high schools, where students are supposed to be learning how to come up with their own ideas, organize their thoughts, write, draw and express themselves. Policies like this are straight-up harmful.

On one hand Iā€™m glad Nate Silver thanked ChatGPT for his bookā€™s metaphors, analogies andā€¦ technical information?! Wow. Says all that needs saying about the book and the author. On the other, who in their right mind would basically admit they canā€™t write and donā€™t understand their topic?

Students finding ways to take short cuts on homework isn't new. What is new is departments of education seeing all this and saying, "wow, let's get teachers to short cut their planning and marking with AI too" so it reduces their workload, without addressing why teacher workload is so bad
