I just noticed this wonderful scratching education poster in the vets’ office today! Declawing is legal in Vermont but our vets will only do it if medically necessary. I found the PDF from AAFP online: catvets.com/public/PDFs/...
Fortunately, declawing for non-medical reasons is prohibited in Germany and most, if not all, EU countries.
These days my old cat doesn’t scratch enough to get his nail on his pinky toe to shed properly, so I have to clip his nails myself. I wish he would scratch!
I had two cats, growing up and as much as they scratched the furniture, never was even thought about declawing them. Wasn’t researched heavily, the main reason was not wanting to make them defenseless.
My personal opinion? Anyone who declaws their cat is committing mutilation. Just barbaric. If you can’t handle cats with claws you don’t deserve cats.
This is great! My cats love those rectangular cardboard scratchers for both scratching and loafing. On the rare occasion they need to stay elsewhere, even a new one is a comfort item.
My cat almost always uses her scratching posts, but she does *occaaaaaaasionally* try to use the sofa... But she stops immediately when I just ask her politely to stop.
Also, maybe others already know this, but if you adopt cats as kittens, adopt two. They'll play with each other and learn that claws hurt. And pretty soon, they won't claw *you* to death either.
Anyone who wants their cat declawed should be made to have all their fingernails removed first.
It's so easy to replace the sisal and/or jute on older scratching posts too! A little elbow grease will keep a $5 scratcher going almost indefinitely, and save your furniture
Poster should double as a scratching post.
