I have wanted Siamese cats my whole life, and finally acquired our decidedly NOT purebred pair from a street cat rescue. They are a delight, and I can sleep at night knowing I’m not supporting terrible cat breeding practices.
I used to want a sphinx but after learning about the health issues they have to endure and their lifespan being shorter I’ve decided to not get one in the future. Besides, my kitty was a shelter rescue who isn’t full breed and she’s the sweetest cat I’ve ever had!
On a side note: these cat life expectancy numbers seem really low.
I get shorts of all sorts of cats recommended at me and even though I should know better I can't help watching them regardless of breed, so I saw the health issues and sudden death of a catokker's sphinx (i believe he was 5 or 6, definitely not old) last year in real time
People always want something 'fancy' or 'special,' when really for an easy/healthy/friendly cat you should bet on a regular old DSH. Can't beat that hybrid vigor. And there are so many absolutely sweet, loveable ones. 🥰
I'm quite surprised that the article gives life expectancy for normal cats at 11.7 years. That seems low. I'd believed it to be more around 16 years (cf dogs 14 years). My rescue cat who is probably between 11½ and 12 years old now and still climbing telegraph polls would no doubt be surprised.
Some folks might be better off with stuffed animals. There's a lot of lovely folks who can make custom plush, can make any cute thing you could ever imagine. No suffering. No unscrupulous breeders. Just cute fluff.
I watch Girl With the Dogs on YouTube and after learning about how many hygienic issues sphinx cats have due to lacking fur, I was pretty shocked
Jesus I knew sphynxes had a shorter life expectancy but I had no idea it was THAT bad Poor little things :( Starting to think we need to ban most deliberately breeding outright for both cats and dogs and make exceptions for established breeds known to have reasonably good overall health.
We have two cats who are 75% Siamese and 25% Sphinx and I really, really hope the genes cross each other out and they get, at minimum, a standard cat's lifespan. 😭
