IMO this is an under-discussed part of the average person's sense of financial precariousness. When economists say inflation is going down, job growth good, they fail to take into account that ppl are paying to replace every single household appliance every 8-10 years now. Phones/laptops every 3-5

Before the internet kittens had to call everyone individually to explain how small and cute they were. Ca. 1920 - 1935. collection.powerhouse.com.au/object/597342

Black and white photo of a shorthaired tuxedo tabby kitten on a floor next to a black, old fashioned candlestick type telephone. The kitten is sitting up on its haunches with its paws against the mouthpiece, peering into it curiously. Another kitten can be seen a couple feet away, blurry but you can see its sleeping in the upright loaf position.

Years ago on an online board far far away, a friend was complaining that her work pants had become increasingly uncomfortable over the course of the day and when she got home, she took them off immediately saying, “SEE YOU IN HELL, PANTS.” We now say this anytime we get to take off hard pants.

"Can I tell yGu a secret? I don't care if there are undocumented immigrants in this country. I think it's a non-issue. Without social security numbers they're not getting the welfare people claim they're getting, the vast majority of them are normal people trying to live a better life.

This whole wall deport-the-illegals bullshit is just the one percent convincing the working poor to blame a subset of the working poor for the fact that they're all poor, instead of realizing they're all poor
due to vast income inequality and resource price inflation in combination with wage stagnation.

The existence of another poor person is not why you're poor. It's because the people who control everything refuse\ to increase your wages.''

Sorry, can't. I have to wrap myself in a chunky cardigan, sip coffee from a gigantic mug and stare longingly out the window all weekend

Can I just- It is absolutely poisonous that the right wing continues to make faithfully doing your job a risk to your life. I felt it as a library worker, every teacher I know feels it, doctors, journalists, now the damn weather reporters who are mostly known for keeping people safe and dad jokes.
