Text is our best bridge here - it preserves some of that verbal knowledge. How we deploy that text is key and ever-changing based on the medium. We're still working to unpack all of that, and like all technologies, it shifts before we really figure it out. 📊
We can lose access to the meaning as well: by losing the language and any bridges to it, or by not having enough context to fully make sense of it. Charts fall into this trap all the time. Dashboards especially, because they rely so much on verbal knowledge. 📊
Literacies are a fascinating skill we've cultivated. Beyond learning the functional part of reading, we use the written word as a primary means to learn and transmit ideas. Truly powerful, if you really consider it. Charts can work this way too, kinda. 📊
