Literacies are a fascinating skill we've cultivated. Beyond learning the functional part of reading, we use the written word as a primary means to learn and transmit ideas. Truly powerful, if you really consider it. Charts can work this way too, kinda. 📊

I was WindsCogley elsewhere. 📊 explored semantics in data visualization & ethics on my blog. 📊 made some pretty dashboards in Tableau, earning various recognitions. 📊 cowrote Functional Aesthetics for Data Visualization with Vidya Setlur. 📊 cofounded Versalytix. 📈 Write about life, cats & grief.

The English language falters so much when it comes to grief. Maybe every language does. A small few who have endured a specific loss know how to say, "I see you." But perhaps more importantly, it's what they do that speaks the most. (1/?)

Ramen.

Ramen, in a large white bowl. Baby corn, bok choy, lotus root, red pepper, fresh green onion and sesame seed sit within a rich brown spicy miso broth. One lone noodle pokes up to the surface. The bowl is off center enough that you know the photographer is a novice.

It's far too easy to be around people and never interact. The cost of this is loneliness, disconnection. We cannot only subsist on a small share of people. We lose our ability to interact when everything is a task, joy ultimately going right along with it.

At some point, we'll have to discuss the societal impacts of automating every task. We've reduced so much waste that the glue has nothing to hold and has dried out. That glue is community - the daily existence in and among people.

The future of 📊 #DataViz is multimodal. Technically, data exposition has always crossed modes, but we're able to interweave them now more than ever. Mixing modes allows more ways for users to validate their understanding - cohesion between modes is key.

Modes text, tabular, visual and voice are in text and graphic form at the top. They funnel into an embedded data experience. The embedded experience includes a title bar for embedded analytics: my data product. A side panel offers a vague side menu. Inside the frame are 2 filters, an audio player (with voice data graphic), data centric text, a small table icon and an embedded dashboard. Coral and bright blue allude to shared data elements across the mediums.

I know this is well trod territory, but what 📊 #dataViz activities have you done with with 4th and 6th graders?
