AEI is a right-wing think tank and the host, Robert Pondiscio, is part of Ryan Walters' project to re-write Oklahoma social studies standards alongside Dennis Prager and the president of the Heritage Foundation. I wonder what their interest is in "Direct and Explicit Instruction"?
It's always the same story. "Science of Reading" advocates go on the Moms For Liberty podcast, "Science of Learning" folks do a webinar with AEI, and it's all just in the neutral service of "teaching kids better." This is what no critical pedagogy does to a mf.
Our community of neurodivergent, disabled, and queer people warn against this stuff. We see the worst of behaviorist and reductionist approaches steeped in scientism, epistemic injustice, metric fixation, and neuronormative domination. Thanks for sounding the alarm.
It is so giving away the whole game that folks that accuse progressive educators of indoctrinating students are the ones who want "direct and explicit" instruction. It's almost like those of us that are supporting the capacity for critical thinking are actually doing the opposite of indoctrinating.
