JD Vance held up the serious diplomatic work of the United States across the Middle East, Africa and Latin America -- where we surely have a few strategic military and economic concerns -- so that he could interrogate career envoys over things like bathrooms and The Gays. Amazing, serious person.

J.D. Vance, Trump’s VP pick, froze dozens of ambassador nominations over LGBTQ issues and diversity hiring, offering a glimpse of his antiestablishment views.

Vance is a clever enemy. He obfuscates his hatred for LGBTQ+ by saying US diplomats shouldn't "offend" conservative governments. Get used to this kind of posturing. Part of the role of US diplomacy is to oppose foreign LGBTQ+ oppression, and not be afraid to express same.

Given the history of the US in the Middle East, West Africa, and Latin America, I'm not sure if this was a good thing he did by accident.

I like how this headline exposes “woke”, when used as an insult, as a thinly-veiled code word for “racist and queer-phobic”.

I initially read this with "held up" meaning that he singlehandedly supported the diplomatic work and was so confused. Of course it makes lots more sense that he obstructed things at every turn.
