The VP debate was a good opportunity for me to write about something I'd been meaning to get to: how the GOP's current opposition to addressing climate change depends upon their successful efforts to block clean energy a decade ago. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
During the vice presidential debate, Sen. JD Vance presented the right’s new case for not taking climate change seriously — a new case that rests on the old case.
The contempt for people who are experts in *any* field and trying to convince the average American one needs only vibes to run a country…is weird and sad.
Why are they so creepy and weird?
One really unique and cool addition to our approach was comparing the aggregate (all species or taxa) to the state-specific permitted species. Doing this, we find "accidental adaptation" with permitted species outperforming the combined average. Farmers know how to pick 'em!
Using a composite index for all species farmed or piloted in the U.S., finfish & seaweeds in more northern regions do well. Much like agriculture, the south is going to perform the worst.
So excited to see this paper finally published! Led by Dr. Cat Fong, we used new statistical downscaled climate projections for all U.S. coasts (from www.actea.earth#aquacultureiopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

Trump’s suggestion of extrajudicial violence is a reminder that he doesn’t care about constraints on power, just deploying it against those he doesn’t like. It’s also reminds us that he’s popular with cops. Gift link: wapo.st/3N8hubw

Both of these things can be true: toxic positivity in the climate movement is bad AND focusing on solutions isn’t inherently toxic positivity. Why? Because we know what so many of the solutions are, but almost none are being implemented at the speed/scale necessary & we don’t know if they will be!
Researchers assessed 42 indicators of climate action needed by 2030 to hold global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C. Only one is on track.
