In the sands of time, where the dunes whisper stories of ancient kingdoms, lies the legend of the Sloughi, the noble greyhound of North Africa. His story is woven into the very fabric of humanity, a legacy that extends beyond 8,000 years, rooted in the beating heart of predynastic Egypt. Imagine a female Sloughi, her coat like ebony silk, tenderly nursing her five pups. A limestone statuette, a silent witness to a forgotten era, captures this moment of pure maternal devotion in the Egyptian Middle Kingdom, between 2033 and 1710 BC. Genetics reveals to us that the Sloughi has spanned millennia, while archeology gives us the vision of a skeleton over 5,500 years old, an echo of a time when the pharaohs did not yet walk the earth. And it was during the Old Kingdom that Queen Herneit, consort of Zoser, chose to rest for eternity with her beloved Sloughi guarding the mastaba that had been destined for her. 1/2
The first artistic representations of this African greyhound emerge from that period: an ivory statuette and a hunting scene, immortalizing the grace and elegance of this breed. But all this was perpetuated throughout the period in which the Egyptians governed their land. I explored the rich history of the Sloughi in “ORIGINS - In search of ancient dog breeds”, dedicating an entire chapter to this breed that witnessed the dawn of civilizations. And again, I told about the Sloughi in “ROMA CANES MUNDI”, where the dogs of the Roman period come to life through the pages.
