The faithful companions of the Mesopotamian peoples

In ancient Mesopotamia, dogs were much more than just pets. They were life companions, guardians of homes and flocks, central figures in art and culture. Among these, two groups stood out for their importance: sheepdogs and sighthounds.
Sheepdogs, with their strength and courage, were essential for the protection of flocks and homes. Depictions of these dogs date back approximately 5,500 years, a time when Akkadians and Sumerians bred a variety of domesticated animals.
Sighthounds, on the other hand, were admired for their speed and agility. The Saluki, in particular, was a highly regarded hunting dog. The first representations of this breed date back to around 6500 years ago. 1/2

These slender, fast dogs were often depicted in hunting scenes, demonstrating their importance in the daily life of the Sumerians.
But these dogs were not only useful for hunting and protection. They were also represented in art and mythology highlighting their central role in Sumerian society (the goddess Inanna and her 7 salukis; the god Dumuzi and his sheepdogs). These artworks and myths offer us a unique glimpse into the life of the Sumerians and their bond with these wonderful dogs.
Today, as we admire modern dog breeds, it is fascinating to reflect on their ancient origins. Ancient Mesopotamian sheepdogs and sighthounds are a reminder of the long bond between man and his best friend. A bond that has lasted for thousands of years and continues today.

Canids among the Pyramids: A Zooarchaeological Investigation at Teotihuacan

When the Teotihuacans built their majestic pyramids, between 2000 and 1500 years ago, which dog 'breeds' trampled the same earth under the weight of those ancient stones? Zooarchaeological research, begun by R. Valadez and expanded by other scholars, has revealed that during the peak of Teotihuacan, at least four, perhaps five, types of dogs shared that world. The fifth type, a progenitor of the modern Chihuahua, remained shrouded in mystery until recently. The remains of these small dogs were elusive until the discovery, in 2010, of a complete skeleton, testimony to an era in which the city, once a destination for pilgrimages, was in decline. The small size of these dogs made preserving their remains a daunting task.

Among other types, the Teotihuacani and their successors bred a dog/wolf hybrid. Not a natural hybridization, as demonstrated by the isotopic tests which revealed a predominantly vegetable diet. A third type was the common Mesoamerican dog, of medium size, perhaps used in hunting small prey and deer. And then there was the 'nice' tlalchichi, similar to the previous one but with short legs (brachymelic) like those of a dachshund.
The last type was the ancestor of the Xoloitzcuintli, evolved following a genetic mutation that made it glabrous (bald). Although the stylized representations may leave room for doubt, the remains of approximately fifteen dogs with characteristics similar to the modern Mexican breed, including dental distribution, confirm their existence. Recent genetic analyzes have revealed that, although the Xolo has retained only 3% of its ancient DNA, there is a direct link between these dogs and their modern-day descendants.

The first artistic representations of this African greyhound emerge from that period: an ivory statuette and a hunting scene, immortalizing the grace and elegance of this breed. But all this was perpetuated throughout the period in which the Egyptians governed their land.
