The ADA is a rare extremely positive case of American exceptionalism; it wasn’t until recently when I started to have the luxury to travel a little bit that I realised how many countries we consider far more socially progressive than the US have no equivalent.
What is amazing to me is *anyone* can be disabled, at *almost any time*, due to no fault or failure of their own. *Especially* with the US driving culture and the amazing rate of car accidents. Everyone should be thinking *shit, that could be me*.
I was born 9 years before ADA and traveled to Ireland/NI in 2003 as an able bodied young person and was still SHOCKED (gobsmacked?) at how inaccessible things were, with none of the same efforts to retrofit or consider different needs that I’d grown up around.
Having moved from Europe to the US I think the ADA is America’s biggest achievement.

It really makes things better for everyone. My mom's not disabled, just 80 years old and has balance issues due to inner ear issues.

It will never not amaze me that during the Bush years when the UN went “the US’s ADA is the gold standard we should adopt a resolution suggesting countries follow their lead”, Republicans went “fuck you for trying to control us”
