Some updated figures now that the August temperatures have been posted. First, how are things going w.r.t. expectations? 2024 is still somewhat consistent with an ENSO response, but the August anomaly is pushing it.

There have been 58,000 fire detections in Bolivia so far this year. That level of activity is unheard of in Brazil's Institute for Space Research record, which goes back to 1998. The level of drought and fire currently in South America is alarming. earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/15329...

Global temperatures have remained persistently high over the past few months despite fading El Nino conditions in the tropical Pacific. We saw records tied or set in May, June, July, and August. Its only in September 2024 that we are likely to move out of record territory:
