18. Diary of the Dead (2007) - George Romero's found footage entry to his zombie films. Gets back to some more effective commentary the series is known for. Very meta. Mostly watched so I can feel consistent with watching other sequels from series I've started/continued in the past week.
17. A Town Full of Ghosts (2022) - found footage about an unhappily married couple buying a ghost town & getting abusive/haunted about it. Good set up, some passable performances, poorly executed jump scares. Tired & gross tropes about indigenous people. Not really worth the hour it takes to watch.
16. The Host (2006) - Bong Joon-ho's monster movie. The film's inciting incident was based on a real thing that happened, so definitely has some commentary about the U.S. & South Korea. CG has not aged well. Themes of class, environment, inept & oppressive government response to public health risks.
New from me: Out of control COVID means permanent segregation for many disabled people "Immunocompromised people are under constant siege, with levels of disease unseen in modern times being normalized in all public spaces." Read here: t.co/3LtA3YECyG
Millions of people cannot afford a(nother) COVID infection. Forever waves of COVID means permanent isolation for us
i seem to remember a time when STUPID people got fucking YELLED AT !!!!!
15. Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991) - another classic series I started last year & liked enough to buy on physical media. I really love the practical effects. Some uniquely goofy kills. I like this one a lot more than at least the previous Nightmare on Elm Street (The Dream Child).
14. V/H/S/Beyond (2024) - I really hated the content of the 1st one, but have enjoyed the others for the most part. This one has a more cohesive theme/story it's telling, but the shorts vary wildly in tone. I'm a longtime fan of Alanah Pearce so it's cool to see her in a Katey Sagal directed short.
This week, the head of the NIAID justified the lack of masking at a Long COVID meeting with the argument that people want to be “normal". In my latest, I unpack all the stigma, ableism, and disrespect for LC patients packed into her statement: www.thegauntlet.news/p/new-niaid-...
Comments from public health official confirm that scientific considerations played no role in decision to eschew mitigations at Long COVID meeting
One month out from the election so here's my hottest political take: Kyle Gass did nothing wrong.
Bonus fav: The Thing (1982) - an all-time great movie by one of my favorite filmmakers. Top tier soundtrack, practical effects, directing, performances — even from the dogs. Looks so good in 4K. This will definitely not be the only John Carpenter movie I watch this month.
