it's wild that R, the ubiquitous statistical computing language, was co-created by a Māori prof (Ross Ihaka) — and yet the vast majority of scientists who use R don't know this is like inventing the toaster. possibly the largest impact of a single member of an indigenous community on modern science

Can anyone recommend popular science introductions to biology? For people who didn’t get much science in school and struggle to understand the difference between a protein, a virus, and a bacteria? (It’s my dad. He asks me this every time I visit. He asked about a book, now.)

🚨Have you ever wanted to track orthogonal ribosomes in real-time in living cells?🦠🔍We got a new preprint for that! Work led by Eszter Csibra with herculean efforts from Georgie Hau Sørensen and Bjarne Klopprogge. #synbio#ribosomesdoi.org/10.1101/2023...

I am excited to share our newest paper on Cell Reports. Check it out to learn about what happens to ribosome pausing during oxidative stress: www.cell.com/cell-reports...

Does anyone have a reliable tool to compute the relative proportion of nuclear vs cyto RNA in CLIP pull-down a, ideally one that does it for background too? #RNAbiology 🧪💻

#RNABiology feed - I just updated the settings so it tracks the last *7 days* of RNAbiology posts. The default value was 24 hours, not long enough, cue "RNA decays" jokes etc etc. Current search terms: RNAbiology|RNABiology|RNASociety|ILoveRNA|TeamRNA|Ribosome|ribosome Suggestions welcome!

Here's a test post to see if I can direct something to the RNAbiology feed. Grad now Dr. Oarteze Hunter led a project and posted a preprint on what happens when you make yeast PladB sensitive. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...#RNAbiology

'Universities are supposed to provide space for serious thought. But I came away from our chats wondering whether my friends might have better luck pursuing this goal outside the academy' An interesting article by David Matthews from 2018. #HigherEdwww.timeshighereducation.com/blog/if-you-...

If you love research, academia may not be for you
If you love research, academia may not be for you

Dutch figures show just how little time professors get for their own research. It may be easier to pursue your intellectual interests outside the university system, says THE reporter David Matthews
