Genuine question - how do you communicate this with students? We’ve had a couple of projects lately turn up quite unexpected results, and I’m having struggle getting across why I’m moderately happy to the students in despair!

I am very excited that my team's Nature Astronomy perspective on radio stars and exoplanets is now out in the wild! arxiv.org/abs/2409.15507

On arXiv today: our accepted Nature Astronomy Perspective piece on the status & future of radio studies of stars & exoplanets, led by @astrojoe.bsky.socialarxiv.org/abs/2409.15507

Two diagrams: on the left, an illustration of the sub-Alfvénic connection of a star and planet, leading to electron cyclotron maser emission in a cone; and on the right, the interaction of magnetised stellar wind with a magnetosphere like Earth's, leading to an aurora and ECMI from the pole.

Putting aside the fact that "cost" should not be a factor in education, I'm going to level with y'all: there is no "cost effective" way to do the project of education. For example: it costs upwards of $50k to train a single US Army soldier, not counting any specialized training.

Are you a male astronomer who started panicking when Australia started advertising for women-only positions? Don't worry. "More men were appointed via non-advertised continuing positions (N=6) than women appointed via female-only advertised positions (N=4) and non- advertised (N=1) combined."
