My latest tech history column is now up on Every! In 1981, Don Estridge broke every rule IBM had to create the IBM PC. He invented an entire industry and gifted it to the company he loved. IBM never forgave him for it. This is his story. every.to/the-crazy-on...#history#technology
Don Estridge broke all of Big Blue's rules to create the home computer. The company would never forgive him for it.
This was a walk down memory lane thanks John
I always thought that first IBM PC was the gold standard, but the corporate pinheads just flushed it down the toilet.
I truly enjoy your writing. Great history and great storytelling.
I was just talking with my dad this past weekend about how the PC's arrival completely devastated the mainframe industry in such a few years. (He was a COBOL expert on Sperry-UNIVAC's VS/9 systems) Also how IBM released the PC without a spreadsheet, despite that being the killer app of the day.
That was beautiful.That was beautiful.
This story is almost an archetype. The creators of things pushed aside by the ones who capitalize on their creations. I was just reading about the original Tesla team before youknowwho barged in and claimed to be the innovator
Ah jeeze I'm not crying, you're crying. What a great profile, and what an ending!
That is a wonderful article, and I was welling up at the end. My first, sadly brief, full-time job was with an Apple II dealership, and that led to my career in IT, so I've long been aware of bits of the story, reading articles about the IBM PC both back in the day & since, but this one is special.
