I think we'd be served so much better by giving each topic the time for a thorough response and discussion. Even if they spent 45 minutes on one topic, we'd learn more from the opportunity to press for facts, to highlight damning omissions, and really make it clear where they stood.
I'd really love a debate, even one per election cycle, where the moderator decided to really dig into responses, without concern about how many topics they needed to get to.
That's not to say that the diagnoses are always correct here, just, it's one of those things where there are lies, damned lies, and statistics.
Yeah, the "mental health epidemic" is the same thing. Real burdens on mental health the past 4 years aside, we have high mental illness rates in the US because we have high *diagnosis* rates. Some nordic countries are extremely reluctant to diagnose these illnesses. There you go.

I like to think that someone on the staff at the NYT, whether an IT person or a disgruntled columnist, deliberately set Douthat's op-ed to go live in the middle of the debate so that it would be clear Douthat didn't actually watch the debate.
