This is the fundamental paradox of AI: if it's actually helping you, there is no way to know when it is no longer helping you. Put another way: if you can supervise it effectively enough to catch its mistakes, you probably didn't need it in the first place.

Speaking as a professional translator, *absolutely* true of machine translation as well.

One of the long-running conceits in sci fi regarding hard-start AGIs is they quickly reach a point where their actions work, but are completely incomprehensible to humans. It's awesome watching tech make all the mistakes they've been warned about by decades of scifi

This is the basic problem with Tesla saying their "self-driving" system will get better with time: that just means longer and longer intervals between interventions, making it more likely you won't be paying attention when the system fails and you have to step in to retake control.

The problem is the framing that ppl give to AI is that it will solve complex problems with precise answers. In the biz world, there is so much BS - many decisions are “justified” after inefficient, non-exhaustive research. AI doesn’t need to be precise, just faster & better than avg is good enough

Right, to the extent it can do anything well, it’s stuff like… generating highly templatized code for non-critical applications. Which, sure, you save some expensive dev time that way, but I’m skeptical you can justify the expense of training the model if those are the only real use cases

The most common story in academia is immigrant or minority students being told that they need AI to make their writing more conforming, and then it makes their work dramatically worse. Just sloppy, inaccurate, repetitive, trite, and unfocused. It’s hard to un-teach that.

It's going to have us putting Brawndo on plants and no one will know that it's wrong. Food Pyramid will be recommended by AI. The more I learn about AI the stupider it sounds.

I made this very point to my students this morning!

It is still useful when you are asked to write pointless stuff that no one will read
